BRAHMS: THE BOY II

William Brent Bell, 2020

Renzo Piano Building Workshop, architects

in collaboration with Adamson Associates (Toronto, London)

The Shard, also known as the London Bridge Tower, is a 72-storey, mixed-use tower located beside London Bridge Station on the south bank of the River Thames. This project was a response to the urban vision of London Mayor Ken Livingstone and to his policy of encouraging high-density development at key transport nodes in London. This sort of sustainable urban extension relies on the proximity of public transportation, discourages car use and helps to reduce traffic congestion in the city.

SLIP HOUSE, LONDRES
Carl Turner, 2012

The project consists of three stacked boxes, pushed or slipped outwards from the back of the site towards the street. This avoids overshadowing houses to the rear and breaks up the bulk of the building, giving it a sculptural form. The three boxes include spaces for living, sleeping and working with a spacious studio space on the ground floor.

The house is extremely energy efficient and designed to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5, with a range of special features including PVTs (solar thermal panels); a wildflower roof; rainwater harvesting for gardening, washing clothes and WCs.

Slip House has been recognised for its design and sustainability credentials through a number of high profile awards including the prestigious Manser Medal and the RIBA National Award for best house in the UK.

RIPARIAN PLAZA 2002-2005
HARRY SEIDLER

Designed by famous Australian architect Harry Seidler, the main objective was to develop a significant building on an important parcel of riverfront land. It would be his last major project.
The outcome was the first dramatic expression of changing use in a high-rise building in Australia. Riparian Plaza has become an architectural landmark that set the benchmark in architectural expression, construction engineering, environmental design and innovative smart technology.
Riparian Plaza is the first multi-purpose building accommodating both office and residential vertical sectors is unique in Australia. The name ‘riparian’ is derived from Latin origins meaning ‘on or pertaining to the riverbank’.
With its 45 degree orientation to the waterfront , Riparian Plaza is perfectly designed to parallel the Brisbane River and to preserve and promote views from all working and living spaces. Completed in October 2005, Riparian Plaza stands at an impressive 250 metres.

Millenium Dome
Richard Rogers
1996-1999
Peninsula Square, SE10 ODX London

Millennium Dome, official name The O2, massive construction project and tourist attraction in GreenwichLondonEngland. It was initiated to house an exhibition for the approach of the 21st century and the 3rd millennium CE (the official start of which was January 1, 2001). The central structure is the largest dome in the world, with nearly twice the area of the former record holder, the Georgia Dome (in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.). Its building site skirts the prime meridian (0° longitude) along the River Thames at the northern end of the Greenwich Peninsula.

Great American Nude
Tom Wesselmann
1967

Traffic Light Tree
Pierre Vivant
1998

Did you know that on this day in 1868 the world’s first traffic lights were installed in front of the Palace of Westminster in London? They used railway technology with semaphore arms for day-time use and green or red gas lamps at night, but it was only a year before they randomly exploded, injuring the constable that was operating them. Traffic signals have come a long way since then, and have made their way into contemporary art in myriad ways, including Robert Rauschenberg’s experimental prints, Iván Navarro’s atmospheric installations, and Pierre Vivant’s discombobulating public sculpture, which now resides near Billingsgate Market in Poplar, London. The Traffic Light Tree was commissioned by the Public Art Commissions Agency, and features seventy-five sets of lights, which are computer operated. Many passersby have also noted its decidedly festive aesthetic.

Description
A fast track design/build project for the State of California, the Caltrans District 7 Headquarters establishes a landmark sustainable building and public plaza in downtown Los Angeles. The main lobby is relocated to the exterior, as a large plaza for office workers, visitors, and the general public. Amenities, including an exhibition gallery and cafeteria, adjoin the outdoor lobby at ground level to draw users from pedestrian and vehicular traffic. [...]
