The Shard, also known as the London Bridge Tower, is a 72-storey, mixed-use tower located beside London Bridge Station on the south bank of the River Thames. This project was a response to the urban vision of London Mayor Ken Livingstone and to his policy of encouraging high-density development at key transport nodes in London. This sort of sustainable urban extension relies on the proximity of public transportation, discourages car use and helps to reduce traffic congestion in the city.
SLIP HOUSE, LONDRESCarl Turner, 2012
The project consists of three stacked boxes,
pushed or slipped outwards from the back of the site towards the street. This
avoids overshadowing houses to the rear and breaks up the bulk of the building,
giving it a sculptural form. The three boxes include spaces for living,
sleeping and working with a spacious studio space on the ground floor.
The house is extremely energy efficient and designed to Code for
Sustainable Homes Level 5, with a range of special features including PVTs
(solar thermal panels); a wildflower roof; rainwater harvesting for gardening,
washing clothes and WCs.
Slip House has been recognised for its design and sustainability
credentials through a number of high profile awards including the prestigious
Manser Medal and the RIBA National Award for best house in the UK.
