Description

A fast track design/build project for the State of California, the Caltrans District 7 Headquarters establishes a landmark sustainable building and public plaza in downtown Los Angeles. The organizational strategy was informed by an optimistic assessment of the vibrancy that will occur as the nearby urban environment develops further. The main lobby is relocated to the exterior, as a large plaza for office workers, visitors, and the general public. Amenities, including an exhibition gallery and cafeteria, adjoin the outdoor lobby at ground level to draw users from pedestrian and vehicular traffic. [...]

A Programmatic building clothed in black vitrolite with silver trim. Streamline Moderne, the conventional nautical porthole in this case is place in the middle of a plate glass window and thus becomes the lens of a camera. The new tenant has maintained the Streamline image but not, of course, the sign.

La voluntad de reconstruir el Pabellón Alemán de la Exposición Internacional de Barcelona, obra de Mies van der Rohe se remonta a mediados de los años cincuenta. En 1954, coincidiendo con los veinticinco años del certamen, Oriol Bohigas había planteado la cuestión por primera vez. Las informaciones eran confusas y existía una leyenda según la cual el pabellón seguía en Barcelona almacenado en algún lugar desconocido. No se tenía noticia exacta de que el Pabellón Alemán, fracasadas diversas tentativas realizadas por las autoridades alemanas para venderlo de modo que así fuese aprovechado en Barcelona había sido finalmente desmontado y devueltos sus materiales más valiosos a Alemania. 
En 1957, de nuevo, Oriol Bohigas escribía a Mies van der Rohe en Chicago para proponerle la reconstrucción y éste contestaba con una breve carta de aceptación en la que mostraba la satisfacción por la iniciativa y su decisión de hacer personalmente la reconstrucción aunque indicando el elevado coste que, a su juicio, podía tener la operación. Desde entonces esta iniciativa ha sido tema recurrente en la ciudad de Barcelona aunque con propósitos y posibles ubicaciones distintas.
