Michael Graves
Born in Indianapolis, he teaches architecture in Princeton since 1962. His architectural works include the Portland Building and the Humana Building, the extension of the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Newark Museum. He created the best-selling 9093 kettle for Alessi. Michael Graves died in 2015

THE UNISPHERE

Flushing Meadows - Corona Park, Borough of Queens.
Constructed 1963-1964

Gilmore D. Clarke, Landscape Architect

United States Steel Company, Engineering and Fabrication

The architects behind Juvet Landscape Hotel, Jensen & Skodvin, wanted to create a hotel that would not intrude upon nature, but rather exist in harmony with the landscape of which it is a part. The concept of a landscape hotel emerged as an opportunity to offer an experience of stunning natural beauty with minimal intervention, opening up locations that would otherwise be prohibited for reasons of conservation.

The Juvet Landscape Hotel is located at Valldal, near the town of Åndalsnes in North-Western Norway. Passing tourists are attracted by a spectacular waterfall in a deep gorge near the road, “Gudbrandsjuvet”. The owner, Knut Slinning, is a local resident.

SAINSBURY CENTER
Norwich Tawn, 1978
Foster & Ass.

Description

With the donation in 1973 of their collection of ethnographic and twentieth-century art to the University of East Anglia, together with an endowment for a new building, Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury sought to establish the Sainsbury Centre as an academic and social focus within the campus. The Sainsburys shared a belief that the study of art should be an informal, pleasurable experience, not bound by the traditional enclosure of object and viewer. As a result the Sainsbury Centre is much more than a conventional gallery, where the emphasis is on art in isolation. Instead, it integrates a number of related activities within a single, light-filled space.
The building brought a new level of refinement to the practice's early explorations into lightweight, flexible enclosures
Structural and service elements are contained within the double-layer walls and roof. Within this shell is a sequence of spaces that incorporates galleries, a reception area, the Faculty of Fine Art, senior common room and a restaurant.
Full-height windows at each end open the space up to the surrounding landscape, while louvres line the interior to provide a highly flexible system for the control of natural and artificial light. Large enough to display the Sainsburys' extraordinary collection, yet designed to be intimate and inviting, the main gallery - or 'living area' - evokes the spirit of the collection's originally domestic setting.
A new gift from the Sainsburys in 1988 allowed the building to be extended to provide space for the display of the reserve collection, together with curatorial and conservation facilities and a space for exhibitions and conferences, giving the Centre greater flexibility in its programming.

The new wing extends the building below ground level, exploiting the contours of the site to emerge in the form of a glazed crescent incised in the landscape. In 2006 a further programme of improvements was completed, which provides an internal link between the main and Crescent Wing galleries, a new education centre, additional display space, and improved shop, café and other visitor amenities.

CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

, 1972

University of California, Irvine
William L. Pereira 1962-ca. 1977

William Pereira, UC Irvine’s first architect, chose the Brutalist style for the original eight buildings on the UCI campus. Brutalism derives its name from the French term béton brut, which literally means “raw concrete”; its premise was to stretch the technical limits of “brute” materials. Pereira’s buildings consist of large concrete boxes in three-dimensional castconcrete panels which float in a sea of open space and rise starkly from the landscape. He took advantage of mid-20th-century technical advances in the use of reinforced and pre-cast concrete, thus creating a consistent appearance across all of the early structures on campus. Throughout the 1970s Brutalist-inspired buildings were erected at UCI by other architects as well.

VILLAGGIO OLIMPICO

V. Cafiero, A. Libera, A. Luccichenti, V. Monaco, L. Moretti (1957-60),
quartiere residenziale INCIS Villaggio Olimpico (1957-60), viale Tiziano

The site selected for the 1960 Olympics was a strategic location along the ancient Via Flaminia. This area along the flood plain of the Tiber had long been used as a site for sporting events. Previously it had been the Piazza d´Armi for horse events and there was a hippodrome. Is was also easy accessible to Foro Italico across the river to the west where facilities built in the 1930's already existed including a stadium. Planned Olympic facilities included 2 stadiums and housing for the athletes. One stadium was to be used for football, the Stadio Flaminio, 1959, and the other for indoor sports, the Palazzetto dello Sport, 1958. Designed by Pier Luigi Nervi. The apartments were to be used after the games as dwellings for 6500 people. The Olympic Village was a showcase project for Rome in the years following World War II. In addition to the 2 stadiums and 1500 or so dwellings, the Olympic Village is a more-or-less complete community including shopping, schools, and a church.

The site selected for the 1960 Olympic Games was a strategic location along the ancient Via Flaminia as it intersected the curve of the Tiber a couple of kilometers from northern gate of the city. This area along the flood plain of the Tiber had long been used as a site for sporting events. Previously it had been the Piazza d´Armi for horse events and there was a hippodrome at the base of the hill below Villa Gloria. There was a national stadium here in 1911 and the site was also used for tennis and became the soccer field for the Lazio team. In the 1931 and 1950 Il Piano regolatore this area was designated as a public park and as a district of palazzine apartment buildings. This was an obvious effort to preserve the open, landscaped quality of the site. During this period the area became a zone of scattered buildings and open spaces and it was selected as the site for the Olympic Village for the 1960 Olympic Games. The choice of this site for the 1960 Olypmpics was also desirable because of the easy access to Foro Italico across the river to the west where facilities built in the 1930's already existed including an Olympic stadium seating 100,000, the swimming and tennis stadiums and other facilities.

Quartiere di Spinaceto

L. Barbera, F. Battimelli, N. Di Cagno, D. Di Virgilio Francione, P. Moroni (progetto urbanistico)Via Paolo Renzi, 149, 00128 Roma, Italia, 1964 -1970
